Biryani Friday @ BTC Restoran - Lorong Plaza Legenda

I have to admit to neglecting 'Biryani Friday' for a while now, even though it's not so regular it definitely hasn't been forgotten! After todays delicious biryani maybe it will be back as a regular feature! Any recommendations for great tasting biryani are very much appreciated, please feel free to leave comments. BTC Restoran was first brought to my attention through 'Groupon', though I failed to get my voucher I still thought it was well worth a visit, especially for Dum Biryani available only a few days of the week. Traditionally dum biryani is cooked together with the meat, this helps flavour the rice and makes the meat succulent and tender. Today I had chicken, and the meat literally fell off the bone, the rice was so tasty and fragrant too, I'll be back again for sure! The set also comes with a good helping of achar, boiled egg, a poppadom and lovely vegetable dhal. Quite simply a delicious and satisfying meal!

BTC Restoran occupies a huge end lot on the corner of Lorong Sepat and Lorong Plaza Legenda, across the main road from Lintas Plaza.

The Bill : 1x Dum Biryani, 1x Teh Tarik Sejuk = 14.70 MYR

Biryani lovers should head here, to BTC Restoran!

Biryani Friday @ Restoran Halimah Nasi Kandar Royal - Harbour City

Biryani Friday this week takes me to a restaurant I've been meaning to try for some time now, Restoran Halimah Nasi Kandar Royal. Whenever I pass during lunchtime there always seems to be a crowd, usually a good indication of tasty food! The biryani didn't have a strong flavour as others I've tasted but definitely had more fragrance than plain nasi putih, although I possibly overpowered this with my generous helping of chicken curry gravy. It's self service at RHNKR so once I received my biryani it was up to me to choose my accompaniments, the fried chicken looked good in its deep red coating, so I picked out a nice piece of breast meat. Next I opted for stir fried cabbage with tomato, carrot and chilli which was really tasty and mildly spicy, then came the curry gravy which was dark and wonderfully spicy. I really enjoyed the food here, it was good quality and very tasty, even though the biryani didn't exactly stand out, also the other food in the nasi kandar looked really good too.

RHNKR is located at Harbour City opposite Sutera Harbour Resort.

The Bill : 1x Nasi Biryani, 1x Ayam Goreng, 1x Sayur, 1x Teh Tarik Ping = 9.20 MYR

I'll definitely be back for more nasi kandar @ Restoran Halimah Nasi Kandar Royal.

Biryani Friday @ Restoran Salim - Lintas Plaza

True to my word here's the second installment of 'Biryani Friday', and what a magnificent biryani it was too! Dum is a method of  cooking biryani, where marinated meat is layered with rice and cooked on a low heat, the cooking pot lid is traditionally sealed with dough to keep all the flavour and goodness inside the pot. Today at Restoran Salim, chicken dum biryani was on offer and it was truly superb, the chicken just fell off the bone and the rice used was extra long basmati, some grains were easily half an inch long! The dish was cooked to perfection and tasted so good, the biryani came topped with cashews, poppadom and boiled egg, achar and curry gravy came as side dishes. Lets hope all my future 'Biryani Friday' adventures are this good! And remember, feel free to post your favourite biryani restaurant here, on Nasi Chomper Blogspot.

Here's something I've never noticed after all my previous visits to Salim's, a free shoe shine! I wonder if it works on flip-flops?!?!?

Restoran Salim is located in Lintas Plaza.

The Bill : 1x Dum Biryani, 1x Teh Tarik Ping = 11 MYR

If today is anything to go by, 'Biryani Friday' is going to be my favourite day of the week!

Biryani Friday @ Kolombong Fish Head Curry & Caffe - Api - Api Centre

Here's a new feature I'm going to endeavour to fulfill, 'Biryani Friday'. Every Friday or at least every other Friday, for you, my readers, I'm going to sample Nasi Biryani in the far and wide reaches of KK and report my findings here, on Nasi Chomper, I know I know, a selfless task!
Please feel free to comment and leave recommendations of your favourite biryani restaurant, I'm especially interested in finding great evening time biryanis, so all help and suggestions are much appreciated.
So to kick start 'Biryani Friday' I headed to Api - Api Centre where there is a fairly large concentration of Mamak stalls and curry houses. I thought I'd give Kolombong Fish Head Curry & Caffe a try because on all my previous visits the biryani was always habis, so today I headed out for a fairly early lunch, at 11.30. My luck was in, as there was a tray, full of biryani behind the glass counter. Along with the biryani I ordered Fish Slice Curry, Achar and a Teh Tarik Ping, a poppadom was also placed on top of the rice. The rice was nice and fragrant and not at all stodgy with hints of cinnamon and star anise coming through. Fried onions, raisins and cashews all helped to give it a great, mild, overall flavour. The fish slice curry is not to be missed either, I'm sure the fish heads great too, but as yet I'm not brave enough to try!!! Since being in KK I also like to have achar as a side dish to my biryani, which I also like eating with crispy poppadoms. Overall this was a tasty, satisfying meal and a brilliant start to 'Biryani Friday'!

Kolombong Fish Head Curry is located on the corner of Api - Api Centre closest to Wawasan Plaza.

Outside eating area where you can catch a nice cool breeze in the midday sun.

The Bill : 1x Nasi Biryani, 1x Fish Slice Curry, 1x Teh Tarik = 8.50 MYR

Kolombong Curry Fish Head is a popular eatery for good reason, next time try their Biryani, you'll be pleased you did!

Banana Leaf @ CS Curry House (Banana Leaf Restoran) - Tanjung Aru

We fancied something spicy and filling today so headed to CS Curry House for one of their yummy Banana Leaf Meals. I opted for the Chicken Biryani Set, presented in a clay pot on top of said banana leaf. Chutney came as a side, as well as a choice of curry gravies that was kindly left on our table to help ourselves.

The Nibbler didn't fancy Biryani today so opted for plain rice with Chicken Curry instead. Once the rice was placed on the Banana Leaf then came the side dishes of vegetables, the Okra or Ladies Fingers deserves special mention as this was superb. Small pieces of Poppadoms were served, as well as a very watery dahl type drink or soup which I think is called Rasam.

Dahl, Fish and Chicken Curry gravy. The Dahl was exceptional in my opinion and The Nibbler loved the Fish Curry gravy!

Fragrant Nasi Biryani.

CS Curry House is located on the front side of Tanjung Aru Plaza, which is on the road leading towards First Beach.

The Bill : 1x Chicken Biryani Set, 1x Chicken Curry Set, 1x Sweet Lassi = 28.80 MYR

Brilliant Banana Leaf by the beach....well almost, a few minutes down the road!

Nasi Biryani @ Mydin Curry House - Api - Api Centre

After bounding into Kolombong Fish Head Curry in search of Biryani and Fish Slice Curry (sorry haven't managed to face the Fish Head yet!) I was slightly disheartened that there was no Biryani today or possibly it was habis already. All was not lost as to my knowledge there's possibly 6 or 8 Curry Houses, maybe more, around Api - Api so I turned on my heels and carried on with my search.
Luckily I didn't have to go far, before spotting out the corner of my eye the golden colour of Nasi Biryani, not only that but Fish Slice Curry was available as well, Nice! This was my first visit to Mydin Curry House and let me tell you, it won't be my last. The Biryani was fragrant and spicy, I also opted for a veggie side which was stir fried okra or Ladies Fingers as it's sometimes called in England. My fish slice was a good size with sweet flesh that mixed perfectly with the sour curry spices. Delicious!

Mydin Curry House is located in the Api - Api Centre, on the same side and not too far from Kolombong Fish Head Curry. The sign says 24 hours opening.

The Bill : Nasi Biryani, Fish Curry, Teh Tarik Ping = 9.20 MYR

I was really pleased with my first visit to Mydin Curry House, there's plenty of choice from the Nasi Campur as well as the a la carte menu. Great food in clean surroundings.

Kari Kambing Gear Box @ Restoran Salim - Lintas Plaza

If like me you thought 'Gear Box' was something you found under the bonnet of a Kancil, then think again! It is in fact according to Restoran Salim 'leg or shank' and in this case Goat Shank, more importantly Goat Shank Curry. Not that I had any idea of this when I headed to Salim, in search of their wonderful Tandoori Chicken Tikka and Naans.
Upon sitting down we saw the big sign advertising Tham Biryani and Kari Kambing Gear Box, we looked at each other, then back at the sign, then back at each other again wondering what on earth was Gear Box? But with Tikka on our minds we placed our order and carried on wondering. It wasn't until we found out that Chicken Tikka was 'habis' that the Little Nibbler's curiosity won over and had to go take a look! I on the other hand changed my order to Tandoori Chicken and Plain Naan, when the Nibbler returned, carrying two huge plates the mystery finally revealed itself. On one the Kari Kambing Gear Box on the other a lovely looking Tham Biryani.
Goat is a meat we don't tend to eat too much of in the UK, in fact I don't think I've ever eaten it back home, I've mainly eaten it on my travels in India and here in Malaysia. I have to say eating such a large piece on the bone is slightly off-putting, I think mainly because it's so unfamiliar to me, but to be fair it didn't put me off too much, as together we finished off every last tasty piece. It was very well cooked and obviously slow cooked in curry spices as the meat was very tender.

The Tham Biryani was very generous and had quite a unique taste to other Biryani's I've tried, which I just can't put my finger on! It had big chunks of chicken, veggies and cashews all mildly spiced, goes great with the kambing curry sauce.

With no Tandoori Chicken Tikka available I opted for 'on the bone' chicken or plain old Tandoori Chicken, though there's nothing plain about Tandoori Chicken from Salim, in my opinion the best Tandoori Chicken in KK. So juicy and cooked to perfection, their Tikka is fab by the way (watch this space for a review).

Now don't get me started on the Naan! If you want to know how Naan bread should really taste just head to Salim's, again for me the best Naan I've tasted in KK!
With a little confusion over the order we ended up with two, oh well never mind! On the left Plain Naan on the right Garlic Cheese Naan.

Teh Tarik comes 'layered'

Restoran Salim is located at Lintas Plaza the sign says twenty four hours opening. I'm not too sure if this is a Sunday special menu but when we arrived at eight in the evening it was almost finished. Arrive earlier to avoid disappointment.

The Bill : 1x Kari Kambing Gear Box, 1x Tham Biryani, 1x Tandoori Chicken, 1x Plain Naan, 1x Garlic Cheese Naan, 1x Teh Tarik, 1x Ice Blended Orange Juice = 34 MYR

Restoran Salim for me is all about Tandoori, Tandoori, Tandoori! The Chicken and Naan breads are the best in KK!
You really should give them a try and you never know you might get surprised by something called Gear Box!
