Laksa & Wantan Mee @ Lau Ya Keng - Jalan Carpenter

When your in Kuching you really should sample the local specialties, two of our favourites are, and you can possibly guess them! Laksa and Kolo Mee. I'm delighted to report that Laksa is again available from Lau Ya Keng hawker centre. Even better is that it's not any old laksa! It's awesome and it almost looks like a work of art with its very yellow egg omelette strips and almost micro-herb corriander, I don't know if today this was by chance but top chefs fiddle around with their food to make it look like this for hours! Ok maybe the plastic dish with calamansi and becalan spoil it a bit, but hey you can't have everything! The soup tasted great and had a deep spicy flavour, prawns were fresh and something new for me, the chicken used had it's skin on so there was extra flavour here too! Top marks and delicious!

The Little Nibbler loves Kolo Mee, but today had Wantan Mee for a change, the wantans were filled with tasty minced pork and veg. Noodles were springy and dressed in pork fats along with char siu and topped with mince pork. Thumbs up all round!

Very busy Mee Lady!

Lau Ya Keng is located at the end of Jalan Carpenter where the Chinese Gate is located. There were new blinds going up when we left, which also has a different name on to what I know, if anyone knows the 'real' name of this place, please leave a comment also any Laksa recommendations in Kuching are very welcome!

With superb laksa and kolo mee, Lau Ya Keng, Jalan Carpenter should be on your eating itinerary!

Curry Laksa @ Penang Prawn Mee Stall - KK 56 Food Court

I'm always on the look out for new Laksa places and spotted this one last time I ate at Food Centre 88. With the promise of Penang Curry Laksa, I had high hopes but unfortunately it was nothing special, just ok. The broth had quite a spicy kick, possibly using the prawn mee broth but was a little oily, prawns, fish cake slices and beancurd puffs made up the main ingredients along with yellow mee. This is possibly more of an evening food court as only a couple of the stalls were open, I shall return one evening to investigate!

KK 56 Food Court is located at Asia City next door to Food Centre 88.

The Bill : 1x Curry Laksa, 1x Teh C Ping = 8 MYR

I think next time I'll try another Penang favourite, Keow Teow Goreng!

Kuching Laksa @ Kedai Kopi Kinabalu - Jalan Gaya

I hadn't been back for laksa at Kedai Kopi Kinabalu since I first blogged it back in September of last year, so I wanted to make sure it was still good and up to scratch! I'm pleased to report it still gets the thumbs up and looking around it's a popular pick here too!

Kedai Kopi Kinabalu is located just off Jalan Gaya behind Fong Ip Cafe.

The Bill : 1x Laksa, 1x Teh C Ping = 9 MYR

Still a great laksa, though I think I got over charged?!?

Laksa @ Sing Wang Kopitiam - Waterfront

The laksa from Sing Wang Kopitiam looked pretty impressive when it landed on my table, loaded high with ingredients! Though for my taste I had to remove the vast majority of the daun sup. Standard ingredients of chicken, omelette, prawn, beansprouts aswell as beancurd puffs were plentiful, the broth however was very mild, luckily this is were the sambal came into its own and the more I added the more I enjoyed this bowl of laksa!

Sing Wang Kopitiam is located in Miri's Waterfront area.

The Bill : 1x Laksa, 1x Teh C Ping = 7.20 MYR

Add the sambal, enjoy the laksa!

Kuching Laksa @ Xin Soon Lee Restaurant - Damai

There's a bit of disruption at the moment in Damai, what with the groundworks going on along the central strip, I'm sure businesses must be struggling as the extensive outside seating isn't available. This didn't stop me from taking my breakfast at Xin Soon Lee Restaurant for a satisfying bowl of Kuching Laksa. The laksa here has a nice spicy kick, further enhanced by added sambal and kalamansi juice, the ingredients are fairly standard having prawns, chicken, omelette and beancurd puffs as well as rice noodles. I do love a hot bowl of laksa for breakfast!

Xin Soon Lee is located along Damai's hawker central, as I like to call it.

Lawas Laksa @ Lawas Homemade Noodle - Damai

I've noticed Lawas Homemade Noodle around Damai for some time now, with '40 years experience of homemade noodles' they should be good, I'm very pleased to say they were! Being a laksa lover I decided to have my noodles spicy soup style. Shredded chicken and omelette, prawns and beancurd puffs, drenched in a dark spicy broth with homemade noodles, yummy!

You can have your noodles kon lau and soup style.

Lawas Homemade Noodles is now located within Kedai Kopi Yun Hyen, Damai.

The Bill : 1x Laksa, 1x Teh C Ping = 8.50 MYR

You can't go wrong with Lawas Laksa for breakfast!

Laksa @ Kedai Kopi Yee Fung - Jalan Gaya

Back to an old and very reliable favourite today for a late breakfast of lovely Laksa. Kedai Kopi Yee Fung is probably world famous for their laksa and rightly so in my opinion, I can't say I've ever been let down by the food quality or taste here! Yee Fung's laksa is quite mild in flavour with the added option of belacan sambal to spice things up a bit along with a zesty squeeze of calamansi. Shredded chicken and omellette, prawns and sliced beancurd puffs are drenched in hot laksa soup along with rice noodles, quite simply a breakfast of champions!

Yee Fung's 3 dishes of Laksa, Ngau Chap and Claypot Chicken Rice.

Yee Fung is pretty much an institution along Jalan Gaya.

The Bill : 2x Laksa, 2x Lemon Kitchai Ping = 16 MYR

Great Laksa, Great Drinks, Great Yee Fung!

Singapore Laksa @ Kedai Kopi 383 - Dongongan

On the hunt for new eateries I stumbled across Kedai Kopi 383 while roaming around Dongongan. The sign for Singapore Laksa immediately caught my eye, and well, the rest is history! The Laksa here doesn't have prawns unfortunately, maybe we should blame the Singaporeans! But what it does have is generous ingredients of shredded chicken and omelette as well as beancurd puffs along with your choice of noodles. You can taste the coconut milk through the spices, giving you a spicy, creamy kick, yum!

Kedai Kopi 383 is located in Dongongan, by the side of Megalong Mall.

Sedap Singapore Laksa @ Kedai Kopi 383!

Curry Laksa Mee Hoon @ Fong IP Cafe - Jalan Gaya

I've eaten a few times now at Fong IP Cafe, normally from the nasi campur selection but today I thought I'd try one of their a la carte items from the menu. As it was breakfast time and it's never a hardship for me to eat laksa, curry laksa mee hoon took my fancy. Unfortunately as laksa's go it was really just ok, nothing special at all, and for 7.50 MYR the ingredients weren't great, 2 prawns, 2 fishcake slice, 1 fish ball, 2 beancurd puffs. On the plus side there were lots of noodles, half a boiled egg and cucmber slices. Taste wise it had quite a spicy kick but somehow lacked depth of flavour. I think I'll stick to the great value nasi campur in future!

Fong IP Cafe is well placed along Jalan Gaya, offering a spacious and clean eating environment with great views along the street.

The Bill : 1x Curry Laksa, 1x Teh C Ping = 10 MYR

The Laksa may not be the best but other great eating and drinking options are available @ Fong IP Cafe!

Kuching Laksa @ Kedai Kopi Dan Makanan Tien Wang - Lido

I'd seen the big banners advertising Kuching Laksa around Kedai Kopi Dan Makanan Tien Wang for some time now, but when I went this morning for breakfast, they were nowhere to be seen! My heart sank, surely it wasn't habis already! Thankfully when I entered the coffee shop the Laksa stall was still there, excellent news!

I ordered the small size, which in my opinion was fairly large, not that I'm complaining as the Laksa was simply superb! Nice and spicy and absolutely loaded with ingredients, shredded chicken and omelette, prawns and mee hon, topped with fresh corriander. I might just stick my neck out here and say that this was probably the best Kuching Laksa I've tasted in KK! Big words I know, give it a try and let me know what you think, do you know of a tastier one? Then let me know too!

Tien Wang is located at Lido. I'm sure it's no secret as there's often queues of people standing at the roasted meat stall.

The Bill : 1x Laksa, 1x Teh C Ping = 8 MYR

Dare I say it again? ......The best Kuching Laksa in KK!

This week is really turning out to be a great food week!!!

Curry Laksa & Kon Low Mein @ Kedai Kopi Wan Soon Hin - Inanam

This was our first visit to Kedai Kopi Wan Soon Hin, we spotted it a few weeks ago when we were looking for places to eat in Inanam. It looked very busy and popular then, and it certainly was this morning. I'm sure this shop is well known to the good people of KK, and I'm very pleased we found it! By the looks of things, roasted and BBQ meat is the speciality of the house here, looking so mouth watering displayed in the cabinet!

Even though the display looked so tempting my craving for Laksa has been quite overpowering lately, so Seafood Curry Laksa was my pick for this mornings breakfast. Now this laksa is one for the spice lover, it's more spicier than a regular laksa and possibly thicker too making it a very filling dish. Fresh fish slices, prawns and beancurd puffs make up the main ingredients, as well as your choice of noodles, topped with fresh corriander. A hearty breakfast indeed!!!

Any regular readers of this blog may well be aware of The Little Nibblers love of  Kon Lau Mee, Kon Law Mee or here at this coffee shop Kon Low Mein! I wonder what the correct spelling is? Or are they all different dishes, I don't believe so, but hey, who knows!?!?
Anyway back to the food. With lots of tasty meat to choose from pork took The Nibblers fancy so a mix of Char Siu and Roast Pork Belly was added with the savoury noodles, topped with some pork crackling. Happy eaters all round!

Teh C Special & Kopi C Ping.

Kedai Kopi Wan Soon Hin is located in Inanam along Jalan Kiansom just off Jalan Tuaran.

The Bill : 1x Laksa, 1x Kon Low Mein, 1x Teh C Special, 1x Kopi C Ping = 22.50 MYR

Can't wait for my return visit to sample some delicious looking roasted and BBQ meat.
